1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

Forgive me if this topic has been posted before, but I looked through past threads and didn't see anything quite like it, so here goes. Simply put-which decade's Horror films do you prefer, the 30s or...

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

It's really too close to call for me....my gut response would be to say the 30's,but on further reflection I'm not too sure. I agree that the 30's pre code films have a certain rawness that is best...

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

Thirties for me - as Engineer Poelzig mentions, there's nothing quite like a pre-code horror film, and the forties had that loong dry spell during the war. Sure, the prior decade had a dry spell too,...

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

Well, the 30s saw great classics -- The Black Cat, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, Island of Lost Souls, Werewolf of London, Son of Frankenstein, the Mummy, Dracula, Murders in...

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

I ahve to go with the Thirties as well. Once you lost Karloff as the Moster that series went down hill. And none of the Mummy sequels are as good as The Mummy although I liked Tom Tyler in the Mummys...

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

The 1930s... easily. The Universal Monster films begin their rapid slide into the crapper (or, at best, the fondue pot) once the word "Vasaria" is first spoken."Great show. Held over for a third...

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

Without doubt, the 1930's... Most of my favourite Universals are from that era - BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE BLACK CAT, THE RAVEN, SON OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE INVISIBLE MAN, DRACULA'S DAUGHTER,...

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

Just to keep everybody honest, let me play the contrarian. Generally the thirties films are more serious, more sincere, and more carefully crafted. And yet, somehow, the forties followups are just...

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

I'd agree with you, Les. I have way more fun with the '40s films than I do with the '30s, even though I'd probably have to say that the "golden age" is King.---------------------- "It's MORE ... than...

Same to you, Les. :) But I'm pretty sure I recall agreeing somewhere else (though I'll admit I'll be darned if I know where or when) :D---------------------- "It's MORE ... than a hobby!"

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

Though my preference is stated, I'll say this-when it comes to independent/Poverty Row stuff, I like the 40s better.-------------- "Say, this is obscene!"

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

The 40's without a doubt for exactally the same reasons Les said. As a matter of fact I've always considered the 30's Classic Horror and the 40's to be "Monster" movies.

You know what .... between CURSE OF THE DEMON and DIABOLIQUES and PSYCHO (made in 1959) and NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and EYES WITHOUT A FACE, etc. (and some fans would add the early Hammers here), I think...

Alright thats no fair, Weavers cheating. Nobody said we could pick the 50's because as I've gotten older I just might go with that too! It would certainly be a close toss up!

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

I'll make this easy, and it agrees with some of the posts above. For genuine horror classics, the 30's, hands down. I'd much rather watch the best of the 30's Universals, MGMs, RKOs, and Paramounts...

Re: 1930s Vs. 1940s-Let The Battle Begin!

I'd rather watch the 40s movies because I have yet to see those Poverty Row type of horror movies. I'v seen the 30s version so many times that I'd rather them sit for another time.
